Charlotte launches Gold line tram extension

goldCharlotte Area Transit System (CATS), North Carolina, launched the second phase of the CityLynx Gold Line tram system that will improve transit options in the greater Charlotte area and offer faster, more convenient access to downtown.
The second phase of the project involves the construction of a 4 km tram line and, when completed, the CityLynx Gold Line tram project will extend to 6.5 km, from the original 2.4 km phase I section that opened for service in July 2015.
The project will include 11 new stops, modifications to six existing stops, and the purchase of six modern trams.
The Federal Transit Administration is contributing USD 75 million in funding to CATS a grant that comprises approximately 50 percent of the project’s total cost of USD 150 million. The remaining cost is being covered by the city of Charlotte, NC. The extension is expected to be completed by summer 2020.
