Bangkok upgrades MRT fare systems with Hitachi Rail

Hitachi Rail has secured four contracts to deliver a new ticketing system for Bangkok’s MRT Orange Line and upgrade the automatic fare collection (AFC) systems on the MRT Blue and Purple lines.

The agreement includes:

  • Full deployment of a new end-to-end AFC system across all 28 Orange Line stations
  • Upgrades to all AFC equipment at 53 stations on the Blue and Purple lines
  • A four-year maintenance contract for the Orange Line
  • A five-year maintenance contract for the QR ticketing back-office system

Signed with CH. Karnchang and Bangkok Expressway and Metro (BEM), the contracts form part of a broader initiative to improve fare collection and digital payment options for passengers across Bangkok’s mass transit network.

The upgraded system introduces modern technologies such as open-loop EMV (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) and QR code ticketing, offering passengers greater convenience and supporting the shift towards more connected and sustainable urban mobility.

Hitachi Rail has been a long-standing technology partner for BEM, having delivered the original AFC system for the Bangkok’s MRT Blue Line in 2004. These latest upgrades further strengthen that relationship and align with ongoing efforts to digitise and integrate fare systems across the network.

“The contracts signed with CH. Karnchang and BEM demonstrate our commitment to delivering the most advanced solutions and services locally in Thailand. This paves the way for full interoperability and greater social benefits for passengers in Bangkok. We are honoured by BEM’s continued trust in Hitachi Rail and look forward to supporting a more seamless and cost-efficient transport experience,” Jean-Marc Reynaud, Vice President of Hitachi Rail RCS, said.
