Adif advances Ourense – Lugo rail modernisation project

Ourense – Lugo railAdif is advancing the renewal of Ourense – Lugo rail line with the installation of an energy remote control system that will manage remotely in real time the electrification which is currently being installed on the railway line. With a EUR 3.4 million investment, it will provide more reliability of the line and its traffic and will streamline the management of eventual incidents. The system installation has been entrusted to the Temporary Business Union (UTE) made up of Industrial Systems and Assemblies, and Mytra Control.

With this action, Adif continues the renewal of the 117 km Ourense – Monforte de Lemos – Lugo line that is connected to the high-speed railway to Galicia, improving its parameters of reliability, comfort and travel times.

Adif has already executed or contracted actions worth EUR 485 million, which represent 88% of the total investment of EUR 550 million that will be allocated to Ourense – Lugo rail line modenisation. Under the project, Adif advances in the renewal of the track covering the ballast, sleepers and rail, which has reached a degree of execution of 53% on the Monforte – Lugo section. The activities to reinforce the bridges and tunnels, including the construction of the new Oural tunnel are progressing. The actions in the field of electrification of the route between Monforte de Lemos and Lugo are 15.8% completed and progress is also made in the adaptation to 25 kV of the electrification of the Ourense – Monforte section.

Regarding the renewal of the signaling and telecommunications systems, 22% is already completed on the Monforte – Lemos section and progress is also registered for the modernisation of Monforte station which will have upgraded and adapted platforms and new passenger information system. starting April 5, 2023, Adif resumed passenger traffic at Monforte de Lemos station following the performed activities covering infrastructure, track, catenary, signaling and telecommunications to electrify the Monforte de Lemos – Lugo section.

In addition, at the Monforte de Lemos dry port, a new platform is being built to expand the tracks to extend their length to 750 metres increasing rail freight capacity.

The electrification of Monforte de Lemos – Lugo section is co-funded by the european Union through Spain’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan
