Bucharest to have a new metro line

The prefeasibility study of Bucharest Metro Line 4, Lac Straulesti – Gara Progresul, Gara de Nord – Gara Progresu section, has been completed. The new metro section will be around 11-km long with 14 stations and one depot. The investment cost is estimated at EUR 1.12 billion. The prefeasibility study was approved by the Technical-Economic Council of Metrorex (Bucharest metro transport company).
The study revealed that from several options of public transport modes, such as metro, bus, tram, express bus, the metro is the most efficient and feasible investment along the corridor connecting Gara de Nord to Gara Progresul. The multiple criteria analysis of the prefeasibility study included a wide range of economic, financial and transport performance aspects.
The main conclusions of the Prefeasibility Study support:
• The establishment of an efficient transport system in the city;
• Reducing the environmental impact of transport;
• Improving Bucharest transport system safety;
• Reducing passenger traffic on Metro Line 2 by increasing public transport capacity along the north-south corridor;
• Improving public transport accessibility in the areas with a high density of the population in the south of Bucharest.
Metrorex announces that the following phase includes the development of the feasibility study to be completed in the second half of 2019. The two studies are financed through the Swiss-Romanian Cooperation Programme. These steps follow the opportunity of developing Lac Straulesti – Gara de Nord – Gara Progresu metro line. The construction of the metro line will improve urban public transport in Bucharest by decongesting surface traffic in the centre and south of the city and will provide a direct connection between the north-west and the south of the capital.
