Freight rail generates USD 28.5bn Washington’s economy each year

Washington freight railThe Washington Council on International Trade (WCIT) and BNSF released a study (An Engine of Prosperity) that found freight rail generates USD 28.5bn (7.5 percent of state GDP) of Washington’s economy each year. Put another way, freight rail’s economic impact is equivalent to almost a decade’s worth of Washington’s economic growth. In addition, 342,000 Washington jobs depend on rail transportation.
The study emphasizes that a strong freight rail system is crucial to Washington’s ability to maintain and strengthen its competitive edge in the global economy.
