Washington: tram services launched officially

01-washingtonMayor Muriel Bowser, District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Leif Dormsjo and other DDOT officials celebrated the official opening of the H/Benning DC Streetcar line for passenger service. This marks the first time the DC Streetcar has been in operation since the original system took its final ride in 1962.
The inaugural 2.4-mile DC Streetcar line services eight stops between Union Station and the intersection of Benning Road and Oklahoma Avenue, near RFK Stadium. The H Street / Benning Road Streetcar is the first part of an eight-mile line that will span the District east to west. During the initial operations, passengers will enjoy free access to DC Streetcar service. After the free introductory period, DDOT will review the fare policy.
“We are excited to get DC Streetcar up and running. Streetcar expands public transportation options for residents and visitors, and connects neighborhood. We thank the businesses and residents along the H Street / Benning corridor for their patience and support leading up this historic days,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser.
“When Mayor Bowser charged DDOT to get the streetcar rolling, our number one priority has been to open a safe and reliable system that will support additional transportation options in the District,” said DDOT Director Leif Dormsjo.
