VBZ orders 12 additional Flexity trams from Alstom

Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich (VBZ) orders twelve additional Flexity trams from Alstom. In 2017 VBZ had ordered 70 vehicles – including an option of ordering a further 70 trams. VBZ has now ordered 52 of these optional vehicles (122 in total).

Over 60 Alstom Flexity trams are in operation

More than 60 Flexity trams are already in operation in Zurich.

The fleet is equipped with the modern smart solution ODAS (Obstacle Detection Assistance System), which supports the driver by recognising obstacles along the tracks. The installed fleet has a high level of availability.

VBZ aims to replace older generation trams

“We are replacing the older generation of Tram 2000 vehicles with the Flexity tram and are driving forward modernisation. Some of the vehicles will also be used to expand services in order to make public transport in Zurich even more attractive,” says Marco Lüthi, Director of VBZ.

“The order shows that VBZ is very satisfied with our tram. The cooperation is excellent and the 60 Flexity trams deployed enrich the cityscape of Zurich”, added Marie Icardo, Managing Director of Alstom Switzerland.

The vehicles in the initial order of 70 trams will be delivered by the end of 2024. The optional vehicles will be delivered by Spring 2028.

Alstom recently celebrated it’s 1000th tram manufactured in Vienna. Since 1990, Alstom Austria, which acquired Bombardier Transport in 2021, has manufactured 1000 modern trams in Vienna for global customers from Austria to Australia
