TCDD Taşımacılık receives Turkish-made rolling stock

Türasaş has delivered to the national rail operator TCDD Taşımacılık new Turkish-made rolling stock, including electric locomotives, EMUs, freight wagons, and fire-fighting vehicles.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu emphasised the significance of domestic production:
“We place great importance on national manufacturing. We are on a journey to realise our nation’s aspirations and establish Turkey as a global power through domestic and national production. Key sectors such as transport, railways, IT, defence, automotive, and maritime are the pillars of our future competitiveness.”

All the newly delivered vehicles were engineered and manufactured entirely with domestic expertise at Türasaş production facilities in Eskişehir, Sakarya, and Sivas.

Referring to the Turkish-made rolling stock, including electric trains, locomotives, metro vehicles, and signalling systems, the Minister noted that Turkey’s railway sector has undergone a major transformation since 2002. “We have not only expanded the rail network but have also built a fully domestic, high-tech industrial ecosystem. This success story has gained the attention of not only our country but also our region and the wider world.”

He added that within the next three years, Turkey aims to produce every component of each rail vehicle used on its network domestically as “our objective is to shape the technology with our own hands and eliminate reliance on foreign supply chains.”

In late May, Türasaş delivered the first five of 95 E5000 electric locomotives, developed under a contract signed in spring 2024. The E5000 is the first domestically designed and manufactured electric mainline locomotive in Turkey, featuring key components such as the traction converter, traction control unit, central control unit, and traction transformer – technologies previously only developed by advanced economies.

Developed in line with the operational needs of TCDD Taşımacılık, the E5000 boasts a power output of 5 megawatts, a top speed of 140 km/h, and EU TSI (Technical Specifications for Interoperability) certification. It represents a new generation of rolling stock suitable for both freight and passenger services.

“Thanks to its TSI certification, it will also serve as an innovative export product, proudly representing the strength of our national technology on the global stage. With the delivery of the first five locomotives, we open the door to a new era,” said Minister Uraloğlu.
Türasaş will deliver an additional 15 locomotives by the end of 2025, bringing the total to 20. In 2026, 30 more units will follow, and the final batch of 45 locomotives will be delivered in 2027, completing the full order of 95.

In 2023, TCDD Taşımacılık introduced the first three domestically produced EMUs (Electric Multiple Units), each capable of speeds up to 160 km/h, operating on the Adapazarı–Gebze route. By the end of May 2025, two additional EMUs were delivered, bringing the fleet to five trainsets.

This year, Türasaş is set to produce 22 more EMUs, with a further 17 scheduled for delivery by the end of 2026, increasing the total fleet to 53 units by 2030.

In February, Türasaş began production of Turkey’s first national high-speed train, designed for speeds up to 225 km/h. Between 2026 and 2028, an additional 14 high-speed trainsets will be manufactured.

In addition, Türasaş has delivered a battery-powered shunting locomotive for TCDD Taşımacılık, intended for low-speed, short-distance operations in stations, depots, and terminals. This zero-emission vehicle offers an environmentally friendly, low-maintenance, and cost-effective alternative to diesel shunters. The first serial production run includes six units, currently under construction.

TCDD Taşımacılık has also received a specially designed fire extinguishing and rescue wagon, intended for swift and effective response to emergencies such as fires or explosions—especially during the transport of oil and hazardous materials.

The wagon features a water tank capacity of 92 tonnes, equivalent to 42 fire engines and 9 tankers, and a foam capacity of 4 cubic metres, equal to 20 fire engines. These features significantly reduce potential losses in emergencies while enhancing safety. Türasaş collaborated with 100 local suppliers to manufacture this advanced emergency wagon.

“By ending our dependency on foreign countries, we are now able to produce all types of rail vehicles using our own capabilities,” Minister Uraloğlu emphasised.
“This achievement is not only a triumph of industrial development—it is also a powerful symbol of our national independence.”

Türasaş was established in 2020 through the merger of Tülomsaş, Tüdemsaş, and Tüvasaş, each of which specialised in various components of rail systems and rolling stock. Since then, Türasaş has become the largest rail vehicle manufacturer in the Middle East, with ambitious plans and a growing international reputation.
