TCDD and Türasaş sign locomotive contract

E5000 electric locomotivesTurkish state-owned rolling stock manufacturer Türasaş and TCDD Taşımacılık signed a contract for the supply of 95 E5000 electric locomotives.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu and marks the beginning of serial production of next-generation electric mainline locomotive, the Eskişehir 5000 locomotive.

“Now, with the E5000, the first electric mainline locomotive with 5,000 kilowatts of power produced with domestic and national capabilities in 2023, we are opening the doors to a new era. We have developed a new generation electric mainline locomotive under the Türasaş brand, which is suitable for the needs of TCDD, with 5 megawatts of power, capable of both freight and passenger transport, with a speed of 140 kilometers per hour,” the minister said.

The E5000 electric locomotives have a maximum axle load of 22 tonnes. The locomotive are manufactured through local and national sources, and is the first electric mainline locomotive with TSI certificate in Turkey. It is a new generation locomotive with a speed of 140km/h. The vehicles have 5000 kW power, AC-AC propolsion system and TSI Certificate.

Recently the rolling stock manufacturer opened Turkey’s most modern and largest capacity bogie production plant at Türasaş Sivas Regional Directorate and these components “are needed for all kind of vehicles used in rail freight and passenger transport and will be produced in this factory. The contract marks the beginning of bogie production for the Eskişehir 5000 electric mainline locomotive for TCDD Taşımacılık,” the minister of Transport said.

During the contract signing ceremony, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu underlined that Turkey will accelerate rail projects and the government supports country’s industry and technology development. “We have already become a global producer and export country worldwide with the national technology products we have produced by developing our domestic industry in the last 22 years. Our country’s exports of medium-high and high-tech products such as machinery, medical, transportation, electrical and electronics, especially the defense industry, will approach USD 100 billion in 2023.”

Rail vehicle production and the development of rail industry is one of the priorities of the Ministry of Transport. In March 2020, the Turkish Presidency decided to merge Tülomsaş, Tüdemsaş and Tüvasaş, three important companies that manufacture and provide different components of rail system and rolling stock under the umbrella of Türasaş. “In the production of railway vehicles, we gather the sector stakeholders under one roof in the rail system production processes. We achieved a new momentum and synergy. We transformed Türasaş into one of the largest rail system and vehicle manufacturers in the Middle East. To date, we have been producing main, critical and sub-products such as new generation locomotives, diesel and electric train sets, passenger wagons, freight wagons, traction converter, traction engine, diesel engine, train control systems, all at international standards,” the minister explained.

In 2023, Turkey has presented the first national electric train, capable of a speed of 160 km/h, and the domestically produced driverless metro train which are manufactured with a 70% local production. The first two EMUs were put into commercial operation and mass production has started with plant to increase production at 56 vehicles by 2030.

In addition, Türasaş is in the final design stage for the ‘national high-speed train’ project and its prototype is planned to be completed this year. The train will be able to run at pseeds of up to 225 km/h.

Türasaş integrated seven factories consisting of locomotives, bogies, electrical machines, engines, wagons, and machines and a total of 912 locomotives of various types and 11,974 wagons of various types have been produced by now.
