Sweco to oversee major Munich S-Bahn expansion

Sweco has been awarded a multi-year contract by Deutsche Bahn (DB) to lead technical supervision for one of Munich’s most significant infrastructure projects. The contract, which commenced in May 2025, spans approximately four and a half years, with the possibility of a five-year extension.

Munich, Germany’s third-largest city, has seen rapid population growth in recent decades. Originally designed to serve around 250,000 daily commuters, the city’s S-Bahn commuter rail system now accommodates more than 800,000 passengers each working day. To address increasing demand and prepare for future growth, major investments are being made to upgrade rail capacity and connectivity across the region.

One of the centrepieces of this investment is the Munich S-Bahn expansion project, which includes the addition of a second main line, a new underground tunnel beneath the city centre, and upgrades to several stations.

Sweco’s role in the project

As part of a consortium, Sweco will provide construction supervision and engineering support throughout the project. The consultancy will contribute approximately 60 experts daily, tasked with overseeing works that aim to double the capacity and improve the operational efficiency of the S-Bahn network.

“Sweco has undertaken several projects for Deutsche Bahn in the past, and we have a strong, long-standing relationship. As a leading European consultancy in the field of transportation, with 6,000 experts in mobility and active travel, we are proud to have been selected to advise Deutsche Bahn on this project, which is of vital importance for Munich and the entire Bavarian region,” said Julia Zantke, Business Area President for Sweco in Germany.

Scope of the Munich S-Bahn expansion

The works include the construction of a second S-Bahn line through the city, featuring a new tunnel to alleviate congestion on the existing route. Several stations along the line will also be modernised and expanded to improve accessibility and passenger experience.

Sweco’s involvement will ensure that all technical requirements are met and that the infrastructure improvements are delivered efficiently, safely and in line with sustainability goals.

The Munich S-Bahn system is one of Germany’s most extensive suburban rail networks. With more than 400 kilometres of track, 150 stations, and approximately 1,000 daily train services, it forms a vital backbone for regional mobility. The second main line will not only improve service reliability but is also expected to reduce car travel by an estimated 300 million kilometres annually.

In conjunction with the new Ostbahnhof station, the expansion will create what is anticipated to become the largest public transport hub in Europe, strengthening links between Munich and the wider Bavarian region.
