Slovenia: Kočevje-Ljubljana railway line to be reopened in 2017

slo-zeleznice_copy2Ljubljana – Kočevje (Slovenia) railway line will be put into commercial service within two years. The rehabilitation works will begin on the final stretch of the 49-kilometre track next year, Infrastructure Minister Peter Gašperšič said.
The reconstruction of the railway is expected to cost around EUR 100 million in total, with the final stretch alone costing EUR 40 million. Gašperšič said that the funds will be earmarked in next year’s budget.
The minister promised that the project would be treated as a priority by the government. Under the current plan, the reconstruction will be completed nine years after it started, running much longer than the original build in the late 19th century. Nearly half a century after public rail service was discontinued on the route.
