Sighișoara – Brașov railway line receives EU funding for rehabilitation

BV-cf_cale-ferata-cfrThe European Commission has published the results of the selection of projects proposed within Member States 2ndcall for proposals for the year 2015 within the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Mechanism.
As for Romania, 12 projects of public and private companies in all four transport modes, from a total of 18 projects submitted in the competition, have been positively evaluated.

The total funding provided by CEF for the transport sector at EU level is EUR 26.25 billion, of which EUR 11.3 billion concern the eligible funds under the Cohesion Policy.
Within the allocation of EUR 11.3 billion, Romania has set aside the sum of EUR 1.23 billion. This allocation remains reserved for Romania where it is incurred on projects under the calls for proposals in the period until 31 December 2016.
In the call for proposals for the CEF 2014 Romania has already used the amount of EUR 711.8 million and the projects rated positively to the call of 2015 still amount to around EUR 530 million  which ensures use of the entire amount allocated to Romania.

The project submitted by the Romanian national rail infrastructure manager, CFR SA, “The rehabilitation of Sighișoara – Brașov railway line, sub – section 2 Apața – Cața” for maximum speed of 160km / h, was evaluated at a cost of EUR 538.3 million. Hence, the CEF Mechanism will contribute with EUR 440 million, thus ensuring a rate of 81.74% of financing. Sighișoara – Brașov rail line is part of the TEN-T core network (Rhine –  Danube  railway Corridor).
