Second call launched for ‘Stations of Tomorrow’ projects in France

Following the success of the initial phase of the “Gares de Demain” (Stations of Tomorrow) programme, Île-de-France Mobilités, the Île-de-France Region, and SNCF Gares & Connexions have launched a second call for projects aimed at enhancing services in 20 additional train stations in the outer suburbs.

First introduced in 2021, the initiative is funded by Île-de-France Mobilités and seeks to bring local services, shops, and community spaces into underused railway stations with fewer than 2,500 daily passengers. The programme aims to breathe new life into these stations, improve safety, cleanliness, and human presence, and preserve architectural heritage, while offering practical services for travellers and local residents.

So far, 14 stations with fewer than 1,500 daily users have already benefited from the scheme, with services either deployed or in progress.

‘Stations of Tomorrow’: 60 new stations open for applications

To continue expanding the initiative, Valérie Pécresse, President of Île-de-France Mobilités and the Île-de-France Region, and Pierre Labarthe, Executive Director for Île-de-France at SNCF Gares & Connexions, officially launched the second phase on 2 June 2025.

From today, 60 additional stations are open to proposals. Project applications can be submitted between 3 June and 15 September 2025 via a dedicated platform on the Île-de-France Mobilités website. Full details, including application guidelines, station descriptions, and criteria, are available online.

The call is open to all types of applicants – individuals, associations, local authorities, and private organisations. Up to 20 projects will ultimately be selected based on their relevance to local needs, viability, and long-term impact.

Examples of eligible services include neighbourhood shops, cultural or sports activities, educational services, and healthcare facilities. These services aim to strengthen social ties, support community life, and may also create new local employment opportunities.

Positive results from phase one

The first round of “Gares de Demain” brought tangible improvements to 14 stations across the greater Paris region. According to a BVA survey conducted in January 2025, the initiative has been well received:

  • 60% of respondents said the project improved their feeling of safety in stations
  • 88% felt it made the station and its surroundings more vibrant

By making better use of the available station space – between 20 and 150 m² per location – the programme aims to transform suburban railway stations into lively community hubs that benefit both passengers and local residents.
