San Francisco receives first new Muni Metro train

08-san franciscoThe San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has received the first of a new generation of Muni Metro trains, which had been delivered from the Siemens factory in Sacramento. The new Muni light rail vehicle will be tested at the Muni Metro East facility to ensure a smooth introduction into service in late summer.
This is the first of four initial trains already in production by Siemens. The trains will replace the current fleet of 151 trains and expand it by 64 in phases over the next few years. The additional trains will also serve the Central Subway when it opens in 2019. The new LRVs  are quieter and safer than the current train fleet, as well as far more reliable.
“An incredible amount of work went into making sure these vehicles are going to work for us in San Francisco – for our riders, for our hills, for our environment on the streets. So much detail went into making sure that we’re really going to get the performance, the comfort, the safety that we want in our system,” said SFMTA Director of Transportation Ed Reiskin.
