RZD may finance the Iran-Azerbaijan Astara project

astaraThe representatives of the railways of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia have discussed the participation of Russian Railways in the financing of the Rasht-Astara (Iran)-Astara (Azerbaijan) railway.
At the trilateral meeting, the parties presented the works carried out on the Azerbaijan and Iran territories, as well as Russia’s participation in freight transport increase on Russia-Azerbaijan-Iran and Russia-Azerbaijan-Iran-India routes.
Witihin the project, this year started the works on 82 m bridge along the Astara River, Azerbaijan and Iran and in March it was launched the construction of 8.3 km rail section from Astara station, in Azerbaijan to the Iran’s border. According to the project, the construction of the bridge and the railway will be completed by the end of 2016.
The line is part of the North-South transport corridor that aims to connect Northern Europe with South-East Asia, including Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia.
