Rail Baltica project hits snag in Lithuania

04-lithuaniaLithuania opened in the fall 2015 a 123-kilometer section of European-standard gauge railway from Kaunas to the Lithuanian border (part of the Rail Baltica project) that only allows for speeds of up to 120 km per hour. This runs counter to the objective of Rail Baltica.
Lithuania has promised to search for possibilities to increase the travelling speed on the railway section. The European Commission has said that to get further funding for the section of the railway Lithuania must come up with a concrete plan on how the existing section can be improved during the next ten years or a new section built enabling speeds of up to 240 kilometers per hour.
