Rabat-Salé light rail extension is approved

Rabat_Tram-de-Rabat-Salé-Marina-du-BouregregRabat’s Council of Municipalities Group, Al-Assima (which comprises the Municipalities of Rabat, Salé and Témara), approved the extension of the Rabat–Salé light rail line in Morocco, by a total of seven kilometers, with expansion occuring in both directions.
In Rabat, the line will be extended for 2.4 km, starting from Moulay Youssef Hospital in Akkari area to Al Kifah Avenue, in Yaâcoub Al Mansour district. In Salé, the line will be extended for 4.6 km, from Hassan II station to Zarbia avenue, reaching the under construction of the provincial hospital in Al-Hssaine district.

Valued at MAD 1.715 billion (USD 171 million), the project will be funded by contracted parties, with 51% divided among the Al-Assima groups, whose contribution is MAD 180 million (USD 18 million), Bourgreg Valley’s administration with MAD 100 million (USD 10 million) and the Fund of Urban and Interurban Road Transport Reform with MAD 592 million (USD 59 million).

According to a statement issued by Al-Assima, the Council has also approved a technical assistance agreement between the consortium and the Rabat-Salé Tramway Company (STRS), in order to follow up on the transport projects in accordance with the partnership agreement set between Al-Assima and Morocco’s Ministry of Interior.

In 2015, the Council also approved the extension of line 2 of the Rabat-Salé tramway by 2.3 kilometers.
