Portugal electrifies the Algarve line

Portugal-rail_20161102_lnorte-50anoseletrificacao06_730x400Infraestruturas de Portugal will electrify the Algarve line in the Tunes-Lagos and Faro-Vila Real de Santo António sections, within the framework of the infrastructure modernization plan “Ferrovia 2020”.

The intervention will allow the use of electric traction in the regional services between Faro and Vila Real de Santo António, near the Spanish border of Ayamonte, and between Faro and Lagos, which will generate substantial reductions in travel times and offer a boost to the development of a region with a strong weight of tourism in its economic activity.

The project includes the electrification of the two stretches, Tunes-Lagos of 46 kilometers and Faro-Vila Real de Santo António of 56 kilometers, a new traction substation for the Faro-Vila Real section of Santo António and the expansion of existing one in Tunes, for the other stretch.  In addition, the signaling and communications systems will be modernised.

In the absence of concrete investment in the substations, the action has a budget of EUR 33.6 million.

The launch of the various bids included in the project starts now and ends in 2108. The work should be finished in the fourth quarter of 2020.
