Porto Metro approves line extension

The operator expects to gain twenty percent more customers with the project whose works will start in 2018. The Portuguese city of Porto will carry out an expansion of the metro with the creation of a new line, the G line, between Sao Bento and the House of Music (Casa de la Música), and the extension of line D in Gaia. The project, which will be completed in December 2017, will be launched in 2018 and requires an investment of EUR 240 million.

The Portuguese Ministry of the Environment responsible for sixty percent of the operator’s management as majority shareholder, together with Metro do Porto that manages the forty percent of the shares, have announced that the studies of the projects for the extension of the metro of the City will be completed throughout 2017, so by 2018, they will be prepared to undertake the works of the first phase of expansion of the metro network.

With the execution of this project of extension of line D in Gaia and construction of the new line G between Sao Bento and La Casa de la Música, the operator expects to attract more than twelve million users. This first draft, which has been adopted unanimously in the Portuguese Parliament, also presents other possibilities for enlargement which are likely to be considered in successive phases of the project.
