Opening of Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway expected in late 2014

Opening of Kazakhstan – Turkmenistan – Iran railway is planned before the end of 2014, extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Turkmenistan to Kazakhstan Maktymguly Akmuradov said at a press conference in Astana.
“It is planned to open the railway corridor by the end of this year,” Akmuradov said. “Terms are being specified, but presumably, the opening will take place in the period between the Independence Day of Turkmenistan (October 27) and Independence Day of Kazakhstan (December 16).”
A meeting between the leaders of the three countries – Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran should take place within the framework of this event, he said.
The ambassador said that the volume of traffic on the new route may reach 15 million metric tons by 2020, according to experts.
