The European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) has officially welcomed Oana Gherghinescu as its new Executive Director. With over a decade of experience at ERA and a PhD in International Economics, Ms Gherghinescu brings deep sector knowledge and a forward-looking vision to the role.
A Romanian national, Ms Gherghinescu has spent more than 11 years within the Agency, focusing on EU transport policies and the advancement of safe, seamless rail operations. In her new role, she aims to strengthen ERA’s collaboration with Member States, promote cost-efficiency through technical standardisation, and accelerate innovation within the sector.
“I am honoured to take on this role at a critical time for Europe’s railways,” she said. “Our mission is to enhance rail’s competitiveness and sustainability by supporting safety, interoperability, and removing remaining cross-border barriers.”
Among her top priorities are the efficient implementation of key initiatives such as the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and expansion of high-speed rail across the EU. She emphasises that technical interoperability must be supported by solid business cases and realistic financing models.
Magda Kopczyńska, Director-General at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport, welcomed the appointment: “Congratulations to Oana Gherghinescu. Her experience will be invaluable in driving forward the vision of a Single European Railway Area with strong safety standards.”
The EU Agency for Railways, headquartered in Valenciennes, France, employs over 200 staff from 22+ Member States. Since 2019, ERA has had the authority to issue single safety certificates and vehicle authorisations valid across the EU, playing a key role in realising a harmonised and interoperable European rail system.
