North Carolina DOT modernizes rail crossing in Davidson County

07-NCDOTThe North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT)’s Rail Division made crossing safety improvements at an intersection near Welcome in Davidson County.
NCDOT installed crossing signals, gates and cantilevers at the intersection of Welcome Center Boulevard and Winston-Salem Southbound Railway tracks. Paid for with funds from both the Federal Highway Administration and the state, this project totaled $304,509. Maintenance funding for the project will be divided equally between the railroad and the state. Five freight trains a day travel through the railroad crossing.
This project is a part of a comprehensive statewide NCDOT program to enhance safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public railroad crossings. Automatic warning devices are now in place at more than 2,600 of the 3,800 public at-grade crossings across the state.
