New York to launch Second Avenue Subway transport services

ny-subwayThe New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced that the inaugural ride on the Second Avenue Subway will be launched on December 31 and revenue service will begin on January 1.
“This significant expansion of the subway system, which was more than 50 years in the making, will benefit millions of New Yorkers and is a major step forward toward our goal of modern and reimagined MTA,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said.
Phase 1 of the Second Avenue Subway marks the most significant changes to New York City metro service in recent decades, and will be built in four phases. Phase I will provide service from 96th Street to 63rd Street and will serve more than 200,000 people per day, reducing overcrowding on the Lexington Avenue Line and restoring a transit link to a neighborhood that lost the Second Avenue Elevated in 1940.
When fully completed, the line will stretch 13.7 km with 16 new stations along the length of Manhattan’s East Side, from 125th Street in Harlem to Hanover Square in Lower Manhattan.
