Mercitalia Rail signs four-year agreement for steel transport

Mercitalia Rail and Marcegaglia Group signed a four-year agreement to annually transport by rail 1.3 million tonnes of steel, with obvious benefits in terms of environmental sustainability.
The agreement, which starts this year and will be completed in 2022, involves about 30 trains per week within Italy, mainly on the Ravenna – Gazoldo degli Ippoliti/Casalmaggiore line, and international lines between Italy and Germany, Poland and Serbia.
Under the contract, the two companies will collaborate for the development of new logistics projects with new freight traffic and services to be launched in the near future.
The service will use the new high-performance Mercitalia Rail electric locomotives. In March, Mercitalia Rail announced that the first of 40 new Traxx E494 electric locomotives, built at the Bombardier Transportation at Vado Ligure plant, was delivered. In December 2017, Mercitalia Rail and Bombardier signed the contract for the supply of 40 Traxx locomotives, with a delivery frequency of five units per month, and the contract should be completed by October 2019. The contract includes an option for 20 additional locomotives for EUR 180 million investment.
The new locomotives, together with the interoperable ones already ordered by TX Logistik, the German Polo Mercitalia company, represents company’s largest locomotive fleet investment, valuated at EUR 400 million. This would renew about one third of its owned locomotives.
