Mercitalia launches new service between Bologna and Livorno

Mercitalia has initiated a new container train service linking Interporto Felsineo, Bologna with the terminal of Lorenzini Terminal at Livorno port. The first train comprised 19 wagons and 42 containers.
The service will be operated on a weekly basis and represents a further step in the path of competitive reinforcement in the railway sector of the port of Livorno. When fully operational, the Lorenzini Terminal aims to move about 35,000 containers per year on trains. The new Livorno Darsena Station links containerized goods directly to the national railway network.
Since the new infrastructure is active, the capacity of the port has increased, while Darsena Toscana Terminal S.r.l. (TDT) recorded an exponential growth in the volumes forwarded by rail, now representing 20% of the total goods moved.
