Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai to split or be fined by EC

ltUnder the investigation initiated by Poland’s Orlen complaint concerning the railway stretch to Renge dismantled by Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai, the European Commission (EC) is going to propose two solutions, according to Lithuanian Transport and Communications Minister Rimantas Sinkevicius.
One of the options includes Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai paying a fine, which may amount to 43 million euros, and rebuilding the Renge stretch. The other option is for the company to divide its operations into two companies: infrastructure and carrying of cargo and passengers.
Lithuania will be given a month to decide between the two options, Rimantas Sinkevicius said.
If the decision is to separate the operations, Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai should be given additional time, added Sinkevicius. The minister did not rule out to go to court, should the EC impose the fine.
