Knorr-Bremse wins LRVs and EMUs braking system contract

brake equipment Škoda Transportation awarded Knorr-Bremse a new contract to supply original brake equipment for light rail vehicles and commuter trains which will be used primarily in the Czech Republic. According to the German company, the total value of the orders is in the high single-digit million-euro range.

Five new low-floor light rail vehicles destined for the Czech city of Brno will be fitted with a Knorr-Bremse hydraulic braking system. The contract includes an option for equipping another 35 LRVs.

“The thriving partnership between Knorr-Bremse and Škoda Transportation was put under pressure by Covid-related travel restrictions. That’s why we’re so pleased to be able to supply our most important Czech customer with our reliable, highly durable braking systems once again,” said Peter Radina, Member of the Management Board of Knorr-Bremse Systeme für Schienenfahrzeuge GmbH and responsible for Knorr-Bremse’s business in Austria.

Knorr-Bremse has also been commissioned to equip 19 two-car electric multiple units for commuter traffic, each with a seating capacity of 160, and 29 three-car electric commuter trains, each with a seating capacity of 240. The brake equipment is also targeted to be installed on another 31 trains in the same class, as an option to the base contract. The company is providing the air supply units, pneumatic braking systems, including magnetic track brakes developed and manufactured in Mödling, Austria, and sanding systems that are also produced in Mödling.

All projects are managed on the basis of highly standardised platform agreements.

“For us and our customer, this has the advantage of reducing the amount of engineering effort required on both sides, as well as shortening delivery times. The proven, streamlined project management approach we’ve established with Škoda Transportation has, once again, proved its worth. And we’re hoping to win new orders for the growing market in Central and Eastern Europe,” said Manfred Reisner, Managing Director of Knorr-Bremse GmbH in Mödling.
