Knorr-Bremse secures new rail contracts in China

Knorr-Bremse has secured new orders to supply braking systems for over 1,000 metro railcars in China, further cementing its position in the world’s largest rail market. The contracts, awarded by train manufacturer CRRC, include significant projects for urban transit systems in Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Wuhan, Shenzhen, and Ningbo.

The orders encompass complete braking systems, including electropneumatic brake control, bogie equipment, and actuators. In total, the company will deliver technologies for approximately 150 metro trains over several years. The combined value of these contracts is estimated in the mid-double-digit million-euro range.

Knorr-Bremse has been a highly reliable partner to the Chinese rail industry for over 30 years,” said Dr Nicolas Lange, Executive Board Member of Knorr-Bremse AG responsible for the Rail division. “These new projects in the metro rail segment show that even in challenging times, we can benefit from the dynamic development of China’s rail industry.”

In addition to domestic contracts, Knorr-Bremse is also expanding its export footprint. The company will supply braking systems for over 100 CRRC locomotives bound for Kazakhstan. These systems are being produced at its Suzhou facility and through Knorr-Bremse Nankou Air Supply Unit (Beijing) Co., Ltd., a joint venture with CRRC.

Further export deals include braking systems for light rail vehicles (LRVs) headed to Astana, Kazakhstan and Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

China’s growing role as an export base for Knorr-Bremse is driven by close collaboration with Chinese train builders, who are increasingly supplying global markets. The company is also implementing its BOOST strategy to enhance its international manufacturing footprint, with facilities in Suzhou and Palwal (India) positioned as regional export hubs to increase delivery speed and flexibility.
