Jokeri LRT construction to start in June

The city councils of Helsinki and Espoo announced that the construction of Jokeri LRT is planned to start at the beginning of June at several sites in both cities.
In the same time, the councils approved the new cost estimate for the project. The cost estimate drawn up for the implementation of the light rail during the development phase is EUR 386 million according to the price level in November 2018. Helsinki’s share of the costs is EUR 268 million and Espoo’s EUR 118 million. Helsinki City Council already approved the cost estimate earlier at a meeting held on 13 March.
The project is implemented in an alliance model between Helsinki and Espoo. The service providers are the contractors YIT Finland Oy and NRC Group Finland Oy (formerly VR Track Oy).
The planned length of the line is approximately 25 km, of which 16 km will be in Helsinki and the remaining 9 km in Espoo.
It is estimated that the line will transport 102,000 passengers per day in 2040. Currently, 40,000 people per day travel between the two cities using the bus line.
Jokeri LRT is expected to start operation in 2024.
