India: Japan and Germany could take part in Coimbatore metro project

Negociations are ongoing with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the German development agency Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to implement a metro rail project in Coimbatore, [a city in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu], Rural and municipal administration minister S. P. Velumani said.
The feasibility study for the project is yet to be carried out, but the first phase of the metro rail is expected to start on Avinashi Road, where a flyover is also coming up. “Work on Avinashi Road flyover and metro rail project will be taken up simultaneously and the work on one will not affect the other,” S P Velumani said.
According to previous announcements, the metro rail project will have a total length of 50-60 km, with 45 km expected to be built in the first phase. This will be one of the biggest infrastructure projects in Coimbatore and, once completed, will alleviate many of the traffic problems of the city.
