Hyderabad extends metro operating contract

Hyderabad automated metro L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Ltd, a subsidiary of Larsen and Toubro (L&T), awarded Keolis the operation and maintenance contract extension for the Hyderabad automated metro system.

The three-year contract which begins on 29 November 2022 also includes an additional extension for three more years.

Keolis has been working with L&T since 2012 and the commercial operation of the metro system started in 2017 when the first metro section entered passenger services.

The collaboration between the concession holder of the Hyderabad metro and Keolis contributed to the continuous improvement of passenger service in terms of comfort, passenger information, safety and cleanliness, as well as the management of major events such as the very popular cricket matches. With an overall passenger satisfaction rate of 93% and a 99.5% satisfaction rate for punctuality, the Hyderabad network is now one of the best rated networks in the country.

Hyderabad automated metro system comprises 3 lines (Red, Blue and Green lines) totalling 69 km served by 57 stations and it is daily used by 250,000 passengers. According to the estimations, the city’s metro system is expected to carry 1 million passengers per day.

In 2020, the authorities of Telangana State together with Hyderabad Metro Rail, L&T Metro Rail and Keolis inaugurated a 11 km section with 7 stations on the Green Line, which is the final extension of this metro line.

The metro network is equipped with the automation and CBTC (Communication-Based Train Control) technology to optimise train frequency in complete safety and ensure a very high level of punctuality.

It is now the second longest metro network in the country, and it contributes to a reduction in travel time for people in the city, as well as to the reduction of road traffic which faces increased congestion as 800 new vehicles are put on the road every day.

The metro system provides connections to the main bus and train stations and serves the  university areas, commercial and business districts.
