Hong Kong: Express Rail project could be suspended

06-hong kongHong Kong’s government has asked the MTR Corporation to submit a plan for a suspension of works on the Express Rail project. The suspension would cost HK$233m (EUR 27.5m) per month, resulting in further delays for the  project, which is already delayed.
The suspension may be needed as additional funding has not yet been approved to meet the cost overruns on the project. The plan which will be submitted by MTR Corporation will outline the steps for carrying out the suspension in case the Legislative Council Finance Committee cannot approve additional funding for the project by the end of March, according to Secretary for Transport and Housing Anthony Cheung.
According to chief secretary Carrie Lam, the government is determined to complete the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link by the target date of the third quarter of 2018, despite the cost overruns and construction delays.
