Government authorises the extension of Lisbon and Porto metros

The Portuguese Government approved the expansion of the Lisbon Metro and the construction of new Metro Ligeiro do Porto sections. The project refers to the “implementation of the Expansion Plan of Metropolitano de Lisboa”, through the extension of the Yellow and Green Lines in Lisbon.
Porto region says that it authorised the “construction of new sections of the Light Metro System of Porto Metropolitan Area, including the Casa da Música-S. Bento sections and the expansion of the Yellow Line, which includes the construction of Parque de Material workshop in Vila D’Este”.
The project for the expansion of the Porto metro network is in line with the recent authorisation granted to the administration of the Light Metro System of Porto to purchase new rolling stock.
According to the announcement, 18 new metro trainsets will be purchased, with an overall amount maximum EUR 50.4 million, excluding VAT, plus maintenance. The confirmation took place at the beginning of December.
For the Lisbon Metro, in turn, the expansion regards the realisation of the “Expansion Plan of the Metropolitano de Lisboa” – extension of the Yellow and Green Lines, on the Rat – Cais do Sodré sections”.
The decision authorises the expenditure of EUR 210.2 million and the purchase of 14 new metro trainsets.
