Evraz marks rails’ longevity record

VNIIZHT’s test tracks

Evraz ZSMK marks a national new record with its DT350 rails manufactured in 2013, which moved 1.5 billion tonne-kilometres in gross tonnage at VNIIZhT’s testing facility, owned by Russian Railways.
The new record more than doubled both the previous best result for T1 rails by service hours before track overhaul and the existing manufacturer’s warranty Evraz ZSMK issued to RZD for DT rails.
This is a good proof of DT350 high performance capacity, meeting the current needs of RZD, especially for the heavily loaded and long routes of the Eastern network, which comprises several regional railways in Eastern Siberia and the Far East.
The results confirm the accuracy of the innovative methods, developed jointly with VNIIZhT, Evraz used to assess the service life of a rail type before the statistics on its active commercial use had accumulated. DT350 rail has shown lower life cycle costs and high economic efficiency, which will enable RZD to reduce its infrastructure maintenance costs and operating costs.
“Increasing the service life of Evraz rails and reducing the cost of their lifecycle is the primary objective of our cooperation with RZD. The development of high-load and high-speed traffic presents us with new challenges and sets new objectives”, Ilya Shirokobrod, Evraz Vice-President, Sales and Logistics said.
Evraz is developing rails with a service capacity of 2 billion tonne-kilometres in gross tonnage and more.
VNIIZHT’s testing area for infrastructure and rolling stock elements and construction,
providing an annual load of 300-350 million tons of gross per year. The test center includes more than 50 test facilities, a test loop (up to140 km/h), speed test polygons (up to 250 km/h, Belorechenskaya-Maikop) and tests on regular railway lines. The test loop includes three electrified circular tracks with adjoining turnouts, laboratory, technical and household buildings. On the circular tracks, dynamic tests of rolling stock and fatigue tests of track superstructure elements аге performed with the use of а test freight train. Average daily tonnage amounts to1 million tonnes gross. In line with test schedule for one calendar year, under the load of 23.5 tonnes the tonnage makes up to 300-350 million tonnes gross.
