EUR 347.5 mln available for Sofia metro from EU funds

Sofia metro “Some BGN 32 billion (EUR 16.35 billion) will be available under the new operational programmes for the new period. Some BGN 10 billion (EUR 5 billion) is already available, as some BGN 680 million (EUR 347.5 million) of the sum is for the metro,” Vice President of the European Commission and European Commissioner for the Budget and Human Resources Kristalina Georgieva said speaking at the official inauguration of the new extension of the metro in the Bulgarian capital city Sofia, FOCUS News Agency reports.
On May 8, 2015, Sofia inaugurated the new extension of the metro system. The new 3 km line, with 3 stations, links two residential districts, from Mladost 1 to Sofia Business Park in the Mladost 4. The new line will carry more than 42,000 passenger per day.
At present, Sofia’s the metro network is formed of two railways, and, according to the general development scheme, the network will be formed of three diameters with extensions to peripheral areas. The total length of these extensions will have 65 km with 63 stations ensuring the transport of 1.2 million passengers/day.
