Etihad Rail: stage two tendering suspended

etihadEtihad Rail announced that it has suspended the tendering process on the construction of the second phase of its railway network. This phase involves the construction of 628 km of new lines, from the rest of Abu Dhabi Emirates network and the connection to Dubai. The railway line will connect the railway to Mussafah, to the Gulf ports (Khalifa
and Jebel Ali Ports) and the Saudi and Omani borders.
The project was estimated at USD 11 billion.
“The company has suspended the current stage two tender process while it reviews the most appropriate options for the timing and delivery of this phase of the project. This decision will have no impact on stage one operations and all bidders have today been informed [of the suspension] in writing,” Etihad Rail said.
In October, contractors had resubmitted bids for sections of stage two of the project.
Etihad Rail’s 1,200 km network will extend across the United Arab Emirates, from the border of Saudi Arabia to the border of Oman.
The UAE’s railway network comprises in three stages. The first stage involves the construction a a 266 km of new line from Shah to Ruwais, for sulphur transport from its sources at Shah and Habshan, in granulated form, to its point of export at Ruwais. The third stage involves the connestion of the rail network in the Northern Emirates, and the preliminary engineering is underway.
