EC grants funds for Madrid-Portugal HSL

02-madridThe European Commission approved a major project for the development of the Madrid-Extremadura-Portuguese Border High-Speed Line, for a total cost of EUR 312.1 million, with EUR 205.1 million coming from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
This project will improve the connectivity between Madrid, the Extremadura region and Lisbon. The safety of this double railway line will be increased by eliminating all the current level crossings while at the same time increasing the capacity for passengers and goods and reducing their travelling times.
The project forms part of the TEN-T European transport infrastructure network and complies with the European directive on the interoperability of the high-speed trans-European railway system.
Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Creţu said: “I am pleased to have approved this railway project, which will make a significant contribution to the network of high-speed communications between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe.”
