DB awards contract for carbon neutral ICE depot

DB-carbon neutralDeutsche Bahn has signed with Caverion a EUR 19 million contract to provide building systems and technical maintenance for a new train maintenance center in Cologne, Germany.
Under the Project Execution, Caverion is responsable for heating and sanitation, ventilation and air conditioning, cooling and automation. After completion in May 2017, Caverion will take care of the technical maintenance of the 230,000 m2 area.
This is DB’s first green ICE maintenance depot. Geothermal and solar energy and photovoltaics are replacing fossil energy sources.
“This project is demanding and requires very reliable and exact planning due to the very short project period and the huge size of the construction site. Clients benefit from our experience and know-how in dealing with such complex and challenging tasks,” Werner Kühn, Caverion CEO said.
The entire building will be operated neutrally without the use of fossil fuels CO2. For the operator relies on photovoltaics for power generation as well as to use of groundwater. “Cooling and heating takes a geothermal system with heat exchange”, as Ansbert Wallhorn, Head of exporting Caverion Cologne branch and regional manager mid-West.
