Chiltern Railways has announced it contributed GBP 1.5 billion in economic, social, and environmental value in 2024—up GBP 154.8 million from the previous year.
The figures come from an independent assessment by transport consultancy Steer, using an established Economic Impact Assessment methodology. The report highlights the growing societal value of Chiltern’s rail services, following the operator’s recent appointment to run new services between Oxford and Milton Keynes.
Key 2024 impact figures include:
- Direct and indirect economic value: GBP 243.7 million (up from GBP 220 million)
- Induced impacts: GBP 169.4 million (up from GBP 155 million), reflecting enhanced support for local jobs and suppliers
- Catalytic impacts: GBP 1.084 billion (up from GBP 950 million), including long-term environmental and productivity benefits from rail connectivity
“It is crucial that we continue to grow our social value contributions as we strive towards making the railway easier, greener and better for our customers and communities,” Vanessa Russell, HR and Corporate Affairs Director at Chiltern Railways, said.
Chiltern has also expanded its community engagement efforts, with ten station adoption groups, over 120 active volunteers, and GBP 140,000 in funding delivered to 11 local projects.
Additional highlights from 2024:
- 22.4 million journeys delivered (up 1.8 million from 2023)
- 115 new staff employed
- Refurbishment of Class 168 trains, with new seating, USB ports, and upgraded Wi-Fi
