Brazil needs more than USD 45 billion to expand its railways

In order to modernise and expand the infrastructure and carry out adequate planning of rail passenger transport, Brazil would need to invest about BRL 170 billion (USD 45 billion), according to data from the National Transport Confederation (Confederação Nacional do Transporte-CNT).
Clésio Andrade, president of the CNT points out that the integration of metro and rail systems to other modes of transport is necessary and urgent.
Andrade spoke about the benefits that the country will have with the expansion of metro and rail transport, with the necessary investments and new technologies.
The expansion of the metro and rail system is fundamental for improving urban mobility in the large Brazilian cities. One of the solutions is, undoubtedly, to accelerate the expansion of passenger rail transport.
Brazil needs to make strong investments in urban infrastructure to avoid the risk of collapse of large cities and metropolitan regions.
”Today, more than 80% of the population live in urban areas. We live with a fleet of vehicles far above the capacity of the roads. The accelerated growth of cities in the last decades has not been accompanied by the expansion of transport infrastructure, which slows down economic development, hampers job creation and causes many upheavals in the population’s daily lives. The CNT estimates that it is necessary to invest about BRL 170 billion (USD 44 billion) in new metro trainsets and passenger trains, to modernise and expand the infrastructure and carry out adequate transport planning on rails, always integrated with the bus system. This is the minimum condition to meet the expansion of demand for mass transport, to improve urban mobility and to ensure the sustainable development of large urban centers”, Andrade said in an interview for the ANPTrilhos Mobility Forum.
