Boston Green LRT extension postponed

01-bostonBoston Green Line light-rail extension’s new opening date has been pushed back to 2021, according to a new annoucement by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). The seven new stations were originally supposed to be operational by the end of 2017.
The MBTA has downsized the original project to USD 2.3 billion, from the initial estimated $3 billion price. As part of the revised project guidelines, the MBTA decided to replace the original contract delivery method with a design-build model.
The MBTA will have to select a new contractor, create a team to manage the project, secure a $1 billion federal grant from the Federal Transit Administration and find an additional $75 million for financing. The FTA said it is still committed to the project but that it is waiting for the MBTA to provide a plan before releasing the grant money.
