Serbia is expecting to put into operation the modernised Belgrade-Stara Pazova railway line by the end of this year, allowing trains to run at speeds of 200 km/h, the Minister of Transport Zorana Mihajlovic has announced.

“Currently, there are 1,533 employees working from Belgrade to Stara Pazova and from Stara Pazova to Novi Sad. In July, the right track on the section to Stara Pazova will be completed by the end of the year and the entire section. And by the end of August next year, we will travel from Belgrade to Novi Sad by a high-speed train of 200 kilometers an hour,” she said.

The Belgrade-Stara Pazova railway project is performed by a Chinese consortium comprising China Railway International and China Communications Construction Company, which is also responsible for the Novi Sad-Subotica-state border (Kelebija) section. For the Belgrade -Stara Pazova section, a USD 350.16 million contract was signed, with a USD 297.6 million loan being provided by the Chinese Export-Import Bank. As part of the modernisation and reconstruction project providing the railway connection between Hungary and Sebia, the Chinese consortium implements the project split into two parts. The 34.5 km Belgrade – Stara Pazova section and the 108 km Novi Sad-state border (Kelebija) line. The consortium is carrying out construction and reconstruction works for 142,7 km of railway lines which will be electrified.

The 40.4-km Stara Pazova – Novi Sad railway line is part of Belgrade-Budapest corridor. The construction works envisage the Belgrade – Stara Pazova and Stara Pazova – Novi Sad railway sections. In July, the right track on the section from Serbia’s capital to Stara Pazova will be completed.

The Stara Pazova – Novi Sad railway project, which is performed by RZD International, is divided into two components. The first one envisages the construction of a 3-km railway viaduct a and a double-track Chortanovtsy tunnel. The works were launched in 2017 and will be completed in 2021.

The second part of the project includes reconstruction and construction works for the 40 km double track between Stara Pazova and Novi Sad. The works have been launched in 2018 and are expected to be completed this summer.
