Austria supports a stronger cargo shift from road to rail

OBB-Cargo_CF029591-651x400In order to achieve this target, the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit) is reorganising the annual funding at the amount of EUR 100 million. The reformation is based on a study that analysed the current regulation and gives recommendations for more efficient funding.

The Ministry of Transport (BMVIT) promotes rail freight in Austria every year with EUR 100 million. The ongoing funding must be renewed in 2018. During a press conference at the Port of Vienna Infrastructure Minister Gerald Klug presented together with Wolfgang Niessner, CEO of Gebrüder Weiss, and transport expert Walter Brenner, a study, according to which the Transport Ministry should increase the efficiency of single wagonload traffic.

“We have ambitious targets to shift cargo to the railway. We intend to increase the share of rail transport by 2030 from one third to 40 percent. The reform of the subsidies system for rail freight transport in Austria plays a crucial role. With the planned changes in favor of wagon load traffic we can shift an additional 100,000 truck trips or 157 million net tonne kilometers to the railway,” Minister Klug mentioned.

More transport by rail means reduced emissions. In addition, competitive rail solutions for logistics provide more options when selecting the most appropriate means of transport.
