Alstom signs Seville Metro maintenance deal

Alstom has signed a new contract with Metro de Sevilla to maintain and upgrade the railway signalling system used on Line 1 of the Seville Metro. The agreement includes maintenance of the Urbalis Flo signalling technology, covering both trackside infrastructure—such as signals, track circuits, point machines and technical rooms—and onboard equipment across the train fleet.

In addition to regular maintenance, the contract will see the renewal of interlockings, hardware upgrades, tools for fixed balises, and the supply of spare parts and repair stock throughout the term of the agreement. Onboard equipment and the Driver-Machine Interface will also be updated, and Metro de Sevilla staff will receive periodic training as part of the service package.

The works aim to improve the line’s long-term availability and safety. “We have partnered with Metro de Sevilla since its inauguration in 2009, and our aim is to continue delivering the best service to the citizens and visitors of Seville,” said Luciano Barbieri, Managing Director of Alstom’s Digital & Integrated Systems (D&IS) for Spain and Portugal. “Thanks to our unique experience in the sector, we will be able to enhance our technical support, introduce technological improvements, enhance maintainability, and support effective management of safety systems throughout their lifecycle,” he added.

Metro de Sevilla’s Managing Director, Jorge Maroto, commented: “Thanks to the agreement reached with Alstom Spain, we will make the necessary investments in our railway signalling systems to ensure that, over the coming years, their performance remains as satisfactory as it has been to date, reflecting our commitment to maintaining the highest levels of quality and safety in our operations.”

Metro de Sevilla, the concessionary company of the Junta de Andalucía, was established in 2003 to design, construct and operate Line 1 of the Seville Metro. The line, which opened on 2 April 2009, serves a catchment area of around 230,000 residents and connects key areas within the city and surrounding metropolitan zone.

The company’s shareholders include Globalvia (88.23%) and the Junta de Andalucía (11.77%). In 2024, Metro de Sevilla recorded nearly 23 million passengers, positioning itself as a leading public transport provider in the region.
