Alpha Trains to modernise Bremen S-Bahn fleet

Alpha Trains has announced that it will procure new trains and will modernise the existing train fleet for Regio-S-Bahn Bremen/Niedersachsen.
The leasing company will buy 16 Stadler Flirt EMUs which will be operated by NordWestBahn, a subsidiary of the French Transdev Group. The agreement will also see the modernisation and refurbishment of 35 Alstom Coradia Continental trains.
In total, 51 EMUs from Alpha Trains will in future be deployed on the Bremen S-Bahn network.
“Renewed deployment of our existing fleet, combined with financing of these new trains, demonstrates how competitive our product and service offerings are and how satisfied our clients are, too,” said Thomas Schmidt, Managing Director of the Alpha Trains Passenger Division.
NordWestBahn has been operating the 270-kilometer Bremen S-Bahn network since December 2010 and the new public service transportation contract will seamlessly follow on from the current contract when the December 2021 timetable change kicks in. The Transdev subsidiary will continue to operate the Bremen S-Bahn network until 2036.
The introduction of the additional 16 new Flirt XL is timed to coincide with the winter timetable change in December 2022 and simultaneous expansion of the route network.
The refurbishment of the Alstom’s EMUs will be performed by Talbot Services GmbH. The project includes Wi-Fi, the installation of a new passenger information and video surveillance system. The trains will also have a new exterior and interior design.
