Algerian Railways and Stadler to create rail JV

SNTFThe Algerian National Railway Company (SNTF) and Stadler Rail signed in Algiers a memorandum of understanding for the creation, in Algeria, of a joint venture specializing in the maintenance and the assembly of trains under the Swiss manufacturer’s brand name. The signing of the memorandum of understanding took place in the presence of Minister of Transports Boudjema Talai and the Swiss State Secretary for Economic Affairs.
The joint stock company will be owned under the 51%/49% rule by Stadler Rail, and, respectively, SNTF and is expected to begin production in June 2016. One of SNTF’s maintenance workshops, located in Caroubier (Algiers), will house the future plant.
In the first phase, the JV will specialize in the maintenance of Stadler trains and equipment already acquired by the SNTF. Since 2009, Algeria purchased 64 train units from Stadler.
