Albania awards technical consulting contract for railway modernisation

Albanian Railways (HSH) awarded the consortium of Ardanuy Ingeniería, Metrotenerife SIM SpA Albania a consulting contract for the implementation of the tender and awarding phases of the works for a 34-km line between the Tirana Public Transport Terminal (PTT) and the city of Durrës.

This contract also includes consulting services for the construction of a new 5-km section and a transfer station connecting the Tirana-Durres line with the capital’s International Airport.

The four-year contract will be completed in 2024. The consortium will be in charge of the advisory and review of all documentation needed for the development of the tender and work-awarding process. It also includes technical support for the HSH project implementation unit in order to guarantee that the work is properly executed. Additionally, the consortium will ensure that all procedures and requirements established by the EBRD are complied with.

The Tirana – Durrës single line is at present the busiest section of the Albanian railway network, providing connection between the capital and Durres, the second larger Albanian city, as well with the port of Durrës, the major maritime gate of the country to Europe and the rest of the world.

In 2019, the EBRD has announced the tender procedure for the Tirana – Durrës rail link. For the implementation of the EUR 92 million project, the Western Balkan Investment Fund provided EUR 38 million and the EBRD, EUR 36.9 million, with a EUR 16 million funding coming from the Albanian government.
