Akiem orders 50 Vectron locomotives

Vectron Dual Mode locomotives Akiem placed a firm order with Siemens Mobility for 10 Vectron Dual Mode locomotives with an option for 40 additional locomotives. The first locomotives are to be delivered in the 4th quarter of 2026.

This order is part of the framework agreement signed in August 2021 for the supply of locomotives and associated services. Akiem previously firmly ordered 100 Vectron locomotives from Siemens Mobility in different batches since 2021.

The ERTMS-equipped locomotives “can operate in an agile way on both electrified and non-electrified infrastructure without compromise on speed and haulage capacity. We are proud to add this offer in addition to our existing Electric Vectron portfolio,” said Fabien Rochefort, CEO of Akiem.

Delivering a maximum power of 2.4 megawatts in electric mode and 2 megawatts in diesel mode, the ordered Vectron Dual Mode locomotives will be able to perform freight operations at speeds of up to 160 km/h. They will be operated in Germany and Austria, with the possibility of expanding to other European countries including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. The Vectron Dual Mode is designed to operate on both electrified and non-electrified routes. By changing from electric to diesel mode, there is no need to switch locomotives.

This financing, carried out with the support of BNP Paribas, Akiem’s advisory bank, will contribute to the acquisition of new rolling stock assets to support Akiem’s growth strategy and that of its customers throughout Europe.

The contract has been signed at the Transport Logistic exhibition 2025 in Munich taking place from 2 to 5 June 2025.

By the end of 2029, Akiem will have received 185 new locomotives and passenger trains, continuing to build a sustainable rail future for European mobility. With over 750 locomotives and a pan-European maintenance service ecosystem, Akiem continues to empower operators with sustainable, high-performance solutions. By consistently investing in its locomotive portfolio, the company aims to contribute to the rejuvenation of rail freight and passenger transport, and is committed to a greener rail sector, supporting modal shift and decarbonisation across Europe.
