Aarhus LRT opened

The city of Aarhus, Denmark, officially opened the light rail network on December 21 after it received the necessary approvals to enter commercial services.
The city has put into service the first 12 km section of the network, with 12 stops, linking Aarhus Rail Station and Skejby University Hospital.
“We are proud to open Denmark’s first light rail system,” Aarhus Letbanes director Claus Rehfeld Moshøj said.
Initially, the LRT section has been scheduled to begin operating on September 23, 2017, but it was cancelled after Danish Transport Authority announced that the Keolis’ safety procedures are insufficient. In May 205, Keolis was awarded the operation contract that envisage the operation of the 12 trams on the 12-km light rail section.
For the project, Stadler is the supplier of 12 Tango tram-trains produced at company’s site in Altenrhein, Switzerland.
The construction works on the project started in 2013 with a EUR 470 million budget provided by the state and regional municipalities. The LRT network will be extended with another 98-km to Grenaa and Odder.
