Argentina: Belgrano rail line receives USD 1.6 billion extra-credit

The Government in Buenos Aires, Argentina, will increase USD 1.6 billion in credit for the Belgrano Cargas railway, which includes a greater participation of components of national origin and key works for the integral recovery of the project not planned when the first credit was negotiated in 2013.

The Ministry of Transport in Argentina signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the intention of achieving a credit extension of USD 1.6 billion with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) engineering and trade company to complete the renovation of the Belgrano rail freight line. The original loan agreed in December 2013 by the national government had been USD 2.4 billion.

The USD 1.6 billion extra-credit will be added to renew 92 railway bridges, the rail ring of the city of Santa Fe, the construction of access to the ports of Rosario and the Rosafe port complex.

The reactivation of the Belgrano rail freight line contemplates the integral renovation of 1,600 km of tracks that cross the provinces of Salta, Jujuy, Chaco, Tucumán, Santiago del Estero and Santa Fe and the acquisition of 3,500 new wagons and 107 locomotives.

The first stage, which takes place in Santa Fe, Chaco and Santiago del Estero, involves the construction of 535 kilometers and is already in full execution. The second stage, for its part, consists of 500 kilometers in Salta and Jujuy and will begin before September 2017.

Finally, in the next few days the third stage, which implies the construction of 558 kilometers, will be tendered.
